RESEARCH

Research is a process of generating knowledge through the adoption of science-based approach,Mathukutty( 2010).  A distinctive feature of science-baded research is that it seeks
to develop, verify and refine theories.

Research is a process in which a phenomenon or aspect of reality is examined by following
certain norms of science.  In the logical positivistic approach, this will be a sytematic, objective and
empirical (facts-based or data based) examination of the phenomenon.  The various steps in research
process are designed to make the process systematic, objective and empirical.

Conceptual Research :  This type of research seeks to advance knowledge on a topic without collecting
and analysing new data, without interpreting the patterns in such freshly collected data.

Empirical Research :   This type of research takes up a research question, make a plausible conjecture
pertaining to the matter of the research question , and then examines whether the reality as reflected in
empirical data supports the empirical data support the conjecture.

Knowledge ;  It is represented as a set of statements, whereas in the mind of a  researcher or a reader,
it constitutes a statement of brief about an aspect of reality.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY

Today is a public holiday in South Africa.  It's a youth day as 500 young men in Soweto decided to match and take to the peoples parliament their views on 16th June, 1979.

The police stopped them as they insisted they where followed,  tried stoning the police then the police fired them.  CPD group4 had a chance of visiting Soweto Cultural center were this incident was on 13th June 2015, it was tries when we got to know the story of that day.

A young boy 13 years old Hacter Peterson was so young not even knowing what was happening was fired in a church Regina Mundi Cathoric Church so as Uganda cerebrates the martry's day on 3rd June every year even the South Africa people remember these young people.

We also visited the Nelson Madela's House where he stayed and the family, it's now a tourist attraction place and many people visit the site.  South Africa is a very big country that many South African people have not visited the place yet.  Tour guides to take you around the place, explaining the different events that took place in the house they have different writings around, attracting images how the house was in 1946,history of the great man of Africa Nelson Madela.

I was amazed to know that Nelson Madela didn't settle until his set goals where achieved.  Pray for African leaders to be aspired by his works, so that Africa gets peace.

African Leader's Summit was in South Africa just last weekend, hope your  country was represented well.
Greetings to Uganda Mother Land , May God give us Peace.

SPEAK UP

Speak up :  For you don't know how much your silence is going to cost.

Speak up :  For your opinion may matter more than you can imagine.

Speak up :  For thoughts have no value until they are shared.

Speak up :  For the world and yourself to know exactly who you are.

LIBRARIANS AND RESEARCHER NEED TO COLLABORATE

Librarians and researchers need to develop a data management plan before setting up any project.

A data management plan is a formal document that outlines what you will do with your data during and after you complete your research.

This data management plan will help a researcher avoiding unnecessary duplication.  It will enhance data sharing thus leading to collaboration and advance in research.  Help researchers be more visible on groups for greater impact when users access the researched work.

Data management planning helps researchers cite the required data and gain out of it and promote it were necessary.  Librarians will help to describe the researcher's  data for easy access with better standards that allow users understand it and discover it.

Better Ethics and intellectual property restrictions should be set in place while planning well data sharing and easy accessing methods.  Strategies for long term preservation ensuring the long term values and data should be made available to other researchers with few restrictions as possible.

The researcher should be advised not to forget drawing a budget covering the data management and preservation costs, including the hardware and software required then the  human resource and costs of Archiving.
I wish you well as your planning the data management plan for new projects.

CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING A DATABASE

A database is an organised collection collection fo data or information that is stored in records in electronic format.  Databases are organised to support the findings of information sources including books, journals articals, conference papers, dissertations and theses, patents, research reports, trademarks, people, companies, and the information in the source.

Database records can be representations of information sources or may contain the full text of the source as well, each record must have records.

Examples of databases include bibliographic databases which contain only the bibliographic details and brief information on the intellectual context of an information source.

Full-text databases : This covers a range of content.  When you search a database, you results will display three options :- (i) A bibliographic description. (ii) A bibliographic description with a link to the full text of the journal article or the book . (iii) The full text which can be a range of texts, for example a chapter in a encyclopedia, a newspaper clipping, a thesis or dissertation or a chapter in the bible.

A database field will include the title field, author field, journal title field and field for the volume and pages numbers.  A record can also include brief descriptions of the intellectual content of the information source, for example fields for descriptors, identifiers and indexing terms.

ON LINE JOURNALS ARE IMPORTANT SOURCES OF INFORMATION

Online journals are available in electronic format, mostly via the web, and usually on a subscription basis.Although some journals have printed counterparts as well, for example Nature, there are journals such as Reading online that are available in electronic format only.

Journals in electronic format are often more convenient to use than their printed counterparts because copies can be printed or saved immediately.

Online journals are usually available as single journal titles through a journal publisher such as Emerald or through information service providers, for example Science Direct or IngentaConnect, that provide access to journals available from various publishers.

There three types of online journals:
a) Subscription journals
b) Subscription journals available free for a limited period
c) Free open-access journals.

As librarians always recommend your users use online journals they avail very usefull information according to search topics. I wish you lack as plan to use online journals in your libraries.

RESEARCH TIPS

Research is formal work undertaking systematically to increase the stock of knowledge, it includes knowledge of humanity, culture and society and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications (OECD,2002)

It's a process of inquiry where a researcher attempts to find out in a systematically and scientific manner.

The end results of any research will be a research report, book chapter, article in a scholarly journal.audio-visual recording, computer software, research proposal, Doctal thesis, master dissertation and mini dissertation.

Services needed for research for researcher to full fill his/her plan may include information access from whatever source you fill may help you as a reseacher, as a librarian i recommend researchers to use a library  by seeking advice  and training to have the skills  from the information manager. You need information technology tools like technical information management and knowledge management services, then your research will be the best.

Carrying out a research is an expensive venture you as a researcher you may need to first collect some funds or soliciting from organizations which support research. Write you proposal first.
Wishing you the best as you write your proposal or take it to makerspace before we live.

Computer literacy is the knowlegde and the ability to use computers and related technology effeciently.
In our current technological envirnment it is important to be computer literate. However one needs know the information and communication technologies (ICTs) ,have the knowledge or skills to find the information you need to use that information effectively.  You need specific information literacy skills and competencies.

1.b) Media literacy
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyse evaluate, create and participate with messages in a variety of formats, from print to video to the internet.

1.c) Information literacy
Information literacy is the ability to know when information is needed,to be able to find the information, to evaluate the information and use the information that has been found.

I encourage you to read more on information literacy , its important, discover what we had not known before, I thank our organizing team in South Africa for the CPD programme and Carnege sponsership.

IT IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

Had you known that we have current awareness services with us(Alerts)
Search engines will allow you to set up an Alert Service.  As soonas new documents on your chosen topic are added to the database, you will be informed
It is importand to manage your alerts extremely carefully, if you set up your alert and your topic is not specific enough, you wlii be inundated with unwanted information.  Make sure you choose the right options for your needs including how often you want to receive alerts and the kind of results you want.
Have a good day as you think of current awareness service of this kind.

Librarians can make a difference in the world

Librarians in Uganda can make a difference in Uganda.  We need to renew our policies to avail them to Legal advisers as to make a different on our copy rights, information policies to all publishers in our country.
